This morning on the way to work I was chatting with a friend on the phone. We were talking about holding each other accountable to making sure we got our workouts in throughout the week, as well as our personal quiet times. My friend and I both like to have organized lives and are very much the “getter done” personality type. However, when it comes to those two things, they are the first to get pushed aside by household chores, among other things. I said, “I need to get better at just putting the laundry basket down and taking my quiet time because the laundry can wait 30 minutes. The world isn’t going to fall apart in 30 minutes–I don’t want to miss the moment.” As soon as that was out of my mouth, I felt Holy Spirit all over that final statement–“I don’t want to miss the moment!”
I was instantly reminded of the story in the Bible when Jesus came to visit Mary and Martha at their house (Luke 10:38-42). Jesus arrived at Martha’s house and she instantly began to busy herself with household duties and serving. Mary on the other hand came and sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to him teach and share his heart. Martha became upset and irritated with Mary and basically said to Jesus, [I am putting in my own thoughts how this conversation might have gone], “Aren’t you irritated that my sister is being rude and selfish and not helping serve you?” Jesus’ response I am sure was shocking to Martha. He said to Martha, “You are the one missing out–there is only one thing that is important and Mary has chosen the best part–to sit at my feet and be with me!”
I don’t want to be like Martha, who missed the moment when Jesus, the King of kings, the lover of her soul, was at her house and she was too busy doing things that did not matter. The laundry can wait, the dishes can wait, the crumbs on the floor can be swept up later, but I don’t want to miss the moment when Holy Spirit is calling to come and sit at His feet. I don’t want to miss the moment where He is wanting to share the secrets of His heart.
Heavenly Father, help me to not miss the moment when You call and tug on the heart strings of my heart. When You are wooing me to come and be with You–those are the moments that matter; those are the moments that will last; those are the moments I don’t want to miss!
SCRIPTURE TEXT:
“Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching. But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]! !But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; there is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.” ~Luke 10:38-42
